Dark Sun – Bloodsand Arena – Session 4

MulAs panic grips the crowd, the adventurers are quickly whisked into the tunnels below the stadium. A guard approaches them and asks that they remain until control has been restored. They agree and wait about an hour.

After their wait they are approached by a robed half-elf with a scroll under his arm. The stranger greets the adventurers and introduces himself as Selonius, a servant of Governor Arisphistaneles. He also explains that one of the governor’s top captains as killed at the games and he fears it was an inside job.

Selonius asks if the party will investigate the matter for the governor and hands them the sealed scroll. It gives the group the right to question citizens and apprehend the criminal. It also says they will be paid 50 gp each and that they are to bring the offender to the governor’s estate.

The party confers and agrees to take the job. Selonius tells them the body has been left as it fell and they may now inspect it. On their way to view the corpse the adventurers discover the victim is Tellemon.

Upon arrival the group begins to investigate the crime scene. Kitano notices a small slender stab wound the entered Tellemon’s left kidney. Meldrick states that such a wound should not have killed a man that size so quickly. Taking a closer look Ittik finds a green, pastelike residue near the wound. Arannis notes that the paste is a poison and requires arcane magic to create.

The guards have also retained some people that were sitting near Tellemon for the party to question. After a few minutes the party learns that a towering male in a white tunic approached Tellemon. Then there was a clattering sound moments before his body hit the ground. And that the killer fled wearing sandals common for gladiators to wear.

Ittik then notices a small cloth sitting under a nearby chair. Wrapped inside is the hilt of a bloody dagger. The cloth is covered in strange glyphs that prove an arcane charm was placed on the cloth. The last bit of information they obtain is that the criminal headed toward the barracks quarter.

The barracks quarter is known to house the mercenaries that guard Altaruk. Once there the adventurers interact with the many off-duty guards trying to glean more information. Between their diplomacy, intimidation and own perception skills the party learn a dwarf was asking questions about Tellemon that very morning. Also the Tellemon received communications from Tyr that he was reluctant to divulge through his ranks.

After learning this information Meldrick notices a dwarf muttering to himself and heading to the outskirts of the barracks quarters. He alerts the party and they follow the dwarf. He enters a training hall and the group pursues.

Upon entering the hall they see the dwarf talking to a large mul. The two figures look up and hear Kitano yelling about who they are and what they are doing. They are taken off-guard as the group continues question them. They even show them the scroll with Arisphistaneles’ signature.

Seeing this, the dwarf tells them he is a partner of Arisphistaneles and all can be explained at the governor’s estate. On the way he explains that Tellemon was in league with the True organization and that they were going to assassinate the governor.

Arisphistaneles confirms the dwarf’s story and pays the adventurers. He also tells him he is a member of the Veiled Alliance and that he is impressed with how the adventurers handled the investigation. He offers them membership into the Veiled Alliance and personal provisions anytime they are in Altaruk.

There is just one catch. In order to join the Alliance they must pass a few initiation tests.

DM Notes:
A lot of skill challenges made this short adventure even shorter. Not a bad thing just something to note. If I had more time I might have added an encounter in here somewhere.
