Stak Bots Yellow Expansion Review

Stak Bots Yellow ExpansionStats:
No. of players: 1-6
Amount of time to play: 10 min
Age requirements: 7+
Set-up time: minimal-5 min (depending on playing mode)

Yellow is a stand alone expansion for Stak Bots, the robot-fighting, card game. This inaugural expansion adds more bots and more ways to play the game.

Stak Bots Yellow Expansion Additions:

If you have never played Stak Bots, read my overview and review here. This post will mainly deal with the new elements added in the Yellow expansion.

This expansion introduces sixteen new bots. There are no exact repeats of any bots from the base set. I’ll highlight some of the more interesting ones. Cloudy Bot cannot be targeted by damage abilities like bash and spike. Shield Bot is really strong, but cannot attack. Greedy Bot scraps all of your other face-up bots and gains the total of their power. And Twice Bot deals damage twice making it great for going on the offensive.

Yellow also gives you four new ways to play the game. Two, Survival and Free Staks, involve building decks based on the bots’ ranks. Survival Mode lets players refill their staks from their supply and the game is over once one player’s supply runs out. Free Staks mode gives you more staks. The rules are per the usual game, but you can attack once from each stak on your turn. There are also the Solo rules that were only available online before and a Quickfire Mode for younger players.

There are some new toggles in this expansion. Attack Tally sets a limit on the number of attacks per turn. Impatience forces you to play drawn cards to your stack. Top Draw lets you draw from the top of your stak. And Swapsies makes swap top cards with your opponents.

Quick Review of Stak Bots Yellow Expansion:

Stak Bots Yellow picks up right where the base game left off. It adds more variety to the bots you can play with and effects within a game.

The cards are of similar quality as those in the original game. The rules just discuss the additions in this expansion. So while this is a stand-alone expansion you’ll need to read the reads from the base game to play this expansion by itself.

The new bots and new ways to play the game are nice additions. This expansion does not add a lot of new rules, but it does add more replay value to the game. Nothing is groundbreaking or earth shattering but it does get you more fun bots to play with.

Just like the original game this expansion is a fun filler that young kids can really enjoy. It may not have a ton of strategy but it is still fun to see what you get and the combinations that occur in a game. If you like the base game adding the Yellow expansion can refresh your experience of the series.
