World Boardgaming Championship – 2014

World Boardgaming ChampionshipsI returned to the World Boardgaming Championships again this year. And again it as only for one day. The day went fast but was full of fun.

Like last year I played in the Race for the Galaxy tournament and just like last year I did not make it past the first round. It was still fun and I am glad I tried to compete. Like usual the other players at my table were kind and the game was fun.

After losing RftG I went to the Open Gaming Hall and lost at Goa. It was a four-player game with a couple friends and another guy that joined us. And though I came in second I still really enjoyed the game. We took a break in the middle of the game as I had tried my first Math Trade. It went really well and though they had always intimidated me, I was glad I did it.

Next I helped a friend learn DreadBall. He was using the humans against my friend who tried the orcs and goblins. We have a league at work and I always enjoy playing the game. The friend I was helping even won.

One of friends had to leave so we taught him Guildhall. This is another game I had not played in a while and was happy we played it. Again I did not win but it was still close and my friend learned a new game he can play with his wife.

For the rest of the day I played prototypes. The first was called Delurium. It is a social deduction game. You are a patient in a mental health facility and each day you wake up and forget who you are. You have a card that faces your opponents so they know who you are but you don’t. Each persona has traits. You are Brilliant or Naïve, Eloquent or Blunt. On your turn you can ask about one of your traits. This helps you figure out who you are. Well it might. Some players must be truthful but one or two are deceitful. They can tell the truth or lie to you. Once someone ventures a guess you must either guess your persona or spend a VP to wait until your next turn to guess. Guessing early gets you more VPs if you are right. You get a new persona each day and after three days the player with the most VPs wins. I hope this game gets published as I think my group will really like it. I even won.

Next I played Wartime, which I had tried at WBC and UnPub before. This is another game I really hope gets picked up. It is a real-time skirmish game that uses poker chip stacks as units. As they are hit you remove chips from your units’ stacks. You must flip an egg timer after moving or attacking with a unit. Once the timer clears you can move or attack with that unit again. I was on a roll as I won both games I played.

The last prototype I played was the Lady with the Dog. In this game you have a wife and a mistress. Your goal is to get one of your tokens alone on the location your mistress is at. There are a few other ways you can score VPs like having a token with another player’s token or having a token on a location further to the right in the line of cards that come out. When you place a token on a location you can take the location’s action. This let’s you move locations, swap tokens or score extra points. I won this game too and we all had fun and gave the designer some feedback.

I really had a lot of fun at the WBC and wanted to thank the people I met and gamed with. It is great being able to meet a bunch of people that enjoy board games like I do.

I had a great time at WBC as well and thanks for playing Delirium. It was really helpful to get so many play tests among so many different people. It is also a great con to just relax and get to know other gamers. Hope to sit across the table with you again sooner than later.
