No. of players: 2-4
Amount of time to play: 20-60 min

Set-up time: minimal

Monsters Unleashed is a stand-alone expansion for the VS 2PCG series. This set introduces the Champions, Inhumans, and a Monsters Unleashed team plus the evil Leviathon.

VS 2PCG Monsters Unleashed Description:

Monsters Unleashed can be added to any of the other sets in the VS 2PCG line up. If you have never played the VS 2PCG, you can read my overview and review of it here. This post is going to focus on the new elements introduced in Monsters Unleashed.

This is a big box stand-alone expansion. It comes with tokens and all the cards you will need to play the game.

A couple of characters, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, are affiliated with two teams. They are affiliated with each other, Moon Girl is also on the Inhumans, and Devil Dinosaur is on the Monsters Unleashed team. This means they can always team attack with each other and may team attack with their other affiliation. These two are so inseparable that if you have one as a main character you get the other. And your opponent must KO them both in order to defeat you.

This set introduces Hidden Characters. A character that can hide may not attack or be attacked. They also must discard and counters and equipment they have.

A couple of the characters are so huge they can hit multiple defenders. When they attack more than one character they strike each defender with their full attack strength. The defenders strike back with the total of all their attack.

Another new keyword is Lumbering. Some Leviathons have it. When they attack the defender gets to choose who will defend.

The Leviathon Invasion is a new two vs one game mode. In it two players work together to defeat the Leviathon team. You use the free-for-all rules with a few changes to help the Leviathon player.

A Quick Review of the VS 2PCG Monsters Unleashed Expansion:

Monsters Unleashed is a really nice addition to the VS 2PCG series. It adds lots of new teams and heroes to the game and a fun new way to play.

The art is good and everything is in line with the rest of the VS 2PCG series. The rules highlight the new elements, but you’ll have to download the full rule if this is the only set you have.

The two vs one mode is probably the most innovative new addition in this expansion. It creates a good three player version of the game. You could always play with three before but it ended up being two vs one but without the help the Leviathon Invasion grant the solo team player.

I continue to enjoy Marvel VS 2PCG. Monsters Unleashed has some great new characters and invested players will really enjoy it. I am not sure it is a great starting spot even though it is a large expansion, but both new and old players should enjoy it.
