Top 10 Board Game Expansions – 2014 Update

Here is an updated list of the best Board Game Expansions. These expansions add to the base game and often make it better. I don’t like to think of expansions being necessary but there are some listed here I won’t play without. Expansions I have not played but have heard good things about (or just missed the list) are listed in the Honorable Mentions section.

Here are my Top Ten Board Game Expansions:

10. War Machine: High Command: Invasion of Sul – All the High Command expansion packs add more variety and decisions to the game, but this one adds new locations and Winds of War cards.

9. 7 Wonders: Leaders – The Leaders can really help hone your strategy. The iconography on them takes a bit to learn but they make some interesting changes to the base game without adding a bunch of new rules.

8. War of the Ring: Lords of Middle-Earth – This expansion introduces scenarios that might have occurred if the characters had acted differently or the story been different. They make for interesting What ifs and change the way the base game plays.

7. Manhattan Project: Second Stage – This expansion is made up of five different mini-expansions and each changes the base game slightly. You can add them to suit your tastes.

6. Revolution: the Palace – It adds two more players and so much more. The four new roles add to the fun ways you can mess with your opponents.

5. Pandemic: On the Brink – Not sure I would play Pandemic without this expansion. The new roles alone freshen the base game. With the new scenarios and new game components this is pretty much a must-have for the original game.

4. Dominion: Prosperity – Though no longer number 1 this expansion still takes Dominion to another level with the Platinum and Colony cards.

3. Smash Up: Awesome Level 9000 – I must say I like all the Smash Up expansions, but I really like this one. The new factions add more fun combos and strategies.

2. Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm – Goals make this game easier to teach and more fun to play. And the additional cards give you more options. I just don’t play without this expansion.

1. Legendary: Dark City – This expansion takes a good game and makes it great. The new villains mean business and the new heroes are fun to play. The new unique bystanders are also a nice touch as is the bribe mechanic.

Honorable Mentions:
Dwarf King’s Hold: Ancient Grudge, Guild Hall: Job Faire, Lords of Waterdeep: Scoundrels of Skullport, Mage Knight: Lost Legion, Nightfall: Martial Law, Pizza Box Football Expansion, Race for the Galaxy: Rebel vs Imperium, Space Alert: The New Frontier, WoW: Shadow of War

Cyclades: Titans is definitely #1 for me.
It’s like a new game and if you play with the Hades expansion… this game has SO MUCH depth!
