Board game reviews, strategy tips & session reports
The Sentinels of the Multiverse App is a digital representation of the board game. It mimics the game well and takes care of the accounting too.
Sentinels of the Multiverse is a cooperative, super-hero themed card game. If you have not played the original game read my overview and review to understand the basic gameplay. The app has a tutorial that explains the mechanics of the game as well as how to use the app.
The app can be played solitaire or pass and play, but online play is in beta now. Other than that is pretty much exactly like the original game.
One way the app is different is it offers variant promo versions of the heroes and villains. You gain access to the variants by completing secret storyline challenges. Or you can go online and use chest codes to unlock them.
The Sentinels of the Multiverse App is an excellent digital port of the analog game. I can understand some people’s annoyance that there is no online play. But it is still a blast solitaire and online is in the works.
The tutorial is great and teaches the game in minutes. The interface is pretty intuitive and matches the look and feel of the card game.
I really like that the app does all of the in-game math for you. There is no complex math in the game, but depending on the heroes and villain you are using and what environment cards are in play, there can be a lot to keep track of. The app does all that and insures no mistakes are made and nothing falls through the cracks.
Another nice feature is the undo functionality. Some digital board games let you undo your last move. Well the Sentinels of the Multiverse App lets you go back a couple turns. This can be very helpful when you realize you’ve made a mistake or planned incorrectly.
I also like that promo cards are available to play. There are a bunch of combinations of heroes and villains to try. The promos add even more replay value to this game. The secret challenges seem like a weird way to unlock them, but you can go online to figure out what you need to do to unlock variants. And the cheat codes are nice if you just want more content now.
You can play across different systems including iPad, Android Tablet and Steam
If you enjoy the Sentinels of the Multiverse game you should pick the digital version up too. It is worth the cost now and will be even more worth it once online play is available.
