Dungeons and Dragons – Wyvern Mountain – Introduction

Last session, we left our adventurers in The Pillars of Night, leaving as discreetly as they could the party made its way back to Adakmi. There they were considered heroes and Auidar suggested a parade. Mayor Glasur agreed and plans were set in motion for a huge celebration the following day.

The heroes spent their night recovering from their wounds and resting, except for Auidar who was creating a reenactment of the adventure for the parade. He even had auditions for anyone who’d like to portay the heroes. The party also met with Emesha the cleric of Pelor who had initially asked them to find Jayrn. She was grateful and willing to help the party anyway she could.

Also the party was approached by a dwarf from a neighboring town, Ogremouth. He said news of their victory had spread and the mayor, Darrak, wants to hire the group to help investigate some strange things happening near Wyvern Mountain. Orsik exclaimed “I don’t want to speak for everyone, but we’ll do it.” He agrees to meet up in Ogremouth the day after the celebration.

The parade goes off without a hitch although most party members believe the reenactment put a bit too much emphasis and glamour on Auidar’s role. The heroes enjoy the day and celebrate long into the night.

The next morning they head out to Ogremouth. The travel is fairly easy and after about a half day’s walk the adventurers arrive at the city. The guards instantly bring them to the mayor’s hall. There they meet Darrak and hear his proposition. He offers each member 100 gp if they can scout Wyvern Mountain and the Smuggler’s Road.

After stocking up at the market, the party sets off. They are escorted to the Smuggler’s Road and begin their ascent up Wyvern Mountain. Not too long in to the trip they come across a rope bridge. Render dashes across it as fast as he can. Unfortunately halfway across he sets of a trap and the bridge collapses. Render falls but is not hurt too badly. At the same time a trap is sprung at the far end of the chasm sending a flare up into the air. The party figures whoever set the flare would know someone was on the way now.

Undeterred the party crosses the divide the old-fashioned way…they climb down the chasm and up the other side. The party takes a minute to catch their breath and then continue on their way.

The trail is fairly easy to follow but at a curve in the road they see a body lying face down in a pool of bloody water. As they approach to investigate a party of dwarves leap up from behind some boulders just off the path. Even though the dwarves surprise the party, the fight is fairly fast and mostly one-sided. Render and Donaar rush into the fray while Orsik and Auidar attack another dwarf hiding between the boulders. Tony rains arrows down upon the ambushers and it makes for a quick fight. Although they took some licks the party is in decent shape. They loot the bodies and prepare to head further up the trail.

DM Notes:
I figured I’d try an adventure from Goodman Games and so far, so good. The bridge was interesting and I am glad it didn’t kill anyone but the encounter was a bit too easy. I have a 6th level party which is on the high end for this module so I may have to ram things up. We’ll see…
